Make a claim for a horse riding accident

Horse riding is known for its dangers and keen riders accept horse riding accidents as an inevitable part of the sport. Regardless of a rider's skill or experience, falls can happen to anybody at anytime, sometimes with disastrous consequences.

Falls from horses can result in broken bones, spinal injuries, brain damage and even death. Surprisingly, the number of air ambulance call outs for horse riding accidents often rivals and even outnumbers calls for motorbike accidents. The severity of injuries sustained is also often comparable.

Unlike motorbikes, horses are entirely unpredictable and have no reliable brakes. Even the most 'bombproof' of horses could spook or bolt at any time meaning that a rider can never afford to be complacent.

Even in the relative safety of the stable yard, horses can be extremely dangerous and safety helmets should be worn at all times. Many horse riding accidents have occurred after riders have returned to the yard as many riders will take off their riding hat before putting their horse away leaving them vulnerable to serious head injury should they get kicked.

One experienced rider was killed in 2008 when she was leading her horse to the stable and decided to jump on its back with no helmet on. The horse spooked and bucked the young rider onto the ground where she hit her head against the wall and tragically died of the head injury she sustained.

Taking certain precautions can help minimise the risk of having a riding accident and suffering a personal injury. Here are some simple points to good equine safety that, if followed, could help save your life.

  • Riding hats should always be worn when riding and while in and around the yard. Always check it conforms to current safety standards PAS 015 or BS EN 1384 and get a professional hat fitting to ensure a good fit.

  • Wear proper riding boots with a heel and instep to stop your foot slipping through the stirrup. Never ride in trainers.

  • Ensure your horse is suited to your riding ability.

  • Take your Riding Road Safety test.

  • If taking lessons, always use a British Horse Society qualified instructor.

If you have suffered a horse riding accident that you feel was due to the negligence of a third party, you could be entitled to making a personal injury compensation claim.
