Around Christmas there may be many more people using ladders than usual, since there are decorations to put up in hard-to-reach places in and outside the house, around lamp posts, and in shopping centres.
This might mean that individuals who never use ladders the rest of the year, and who may not have replaced their ladder for a long time, could be prone to suffering a personal injury during the festive season.
There are two reasons for this. The first is that they are not aware of the safety precautions which go with using a ladder and working at height, and the second is that the ladder they use may be past its best and could break while in use.
However, it is unlikely that a victim of an at-home ladder injury will be able to claim compensation unless the ladder they brought is still relatively new and breaks due to a fault in its design or manufacture.
On the other hand, people employed to put lights and decorations up in town centres should be able to make a compensation claim for a fall from height or other ladder-related injury if they have not been provided with the correct training, a suitable ladder, or a harnesses and similar protective equipment.
It is their employer's responsibility to make sure that when staff work at height they are as safe as possible.
Failure to protect them from a work accident could result in the company or organisation being fined by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and may mean that they have a claim made against them by the victim of the incident.
Approaching the 25th of December and the New Year, one of the last things an employee needs is to suffer an injury which means that they have to stay in hospital or are unable to continue working in the same capacity as they were before the accident.
Furthermore, the financial problems may have an impact on their way-of-life and planned festivities.
By making a claim against a negligent employer for an accident at work, the victim of a ladder injury may be able to receive the compensation they deserve and have one less thing to worry about while they recover.
