One trade which may often be overlooked when talking about industrial injury is the fashion manufacturing sector.
In 2009, sandblasting of jeans was banned in Turkey's factories, when it was proven that 46 former sandblasting operators employed around the country had contracted silicosis as a result of their work.
Sandblasting jeans gives them a worn appearance, which is fashionable, but not a necessary process when making the denim trousers.
However, in 2011, despite the proof that employees have suffered health problems due to the dust they inhaled while working on the process, three successful Italian fashion-houses were still using this technique in order to make their jeans more appealing to consumers across the world.
The Clean Clothes Campaign began collecting signatures for a petition against the use of this hazardous technique in February 2011.
Many designers decided to stop using sandblasting on their cloths in response to the accumulating signatures against the practice, however, some fashion houses resisted.
The Clean Clothes Campaign's spokeswoman stated at the time that one of the powerful companies "telephoned me to say thanks for the information and that it did not interest them. I was pretty surprised. This is a serious issue. People have died because of sandblasting".
Hopefully, any employees at a factory which carries out these processes will be protected from harm, but if they are affected it may be necessary for them to seek a compensation claim for personal injury.
