In March 2010 a government committee warned MPs that up to 50,000 people a year in the UK could be dying prematurely due to poor air quality and this may mean a rise in the number of industrial air pollution claims being lodged against businesses and local authorities.
A six-month investigation by the Environment Audit Committee revealed that minute sooty particles in the air could reduce people's lives by as much as nine years in air pollution hotspots.
Evidence was gathered from government ministers and medical experts revealing a lack of action to alleviate the problem which may see huge fines imposed by the European Union if Britain does not make improvements to its air quality.
The committee found that EU air quality laws had been broken for over a decade and figures gained from the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs showed that the scale of the long-term problem was serious. They claimed the scale of the problem had been repressed.
Sooty particles known as PM10s have caused the long-term air pollution problem. PM10s contain nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) and these can make asthma symptoms worse and exacerbate heart disease and respiratory illnesses.
The Committee chairman, Tim Yeo, said, "Despite these considerable impacts on public health, very little effort is being put into reducing air pollution levels, compared with efforts to tackle smoking, alcohol misuse and obesity. Much more needs to be done to save lives and reduce the enormous burden air pollution is placing on the NHS."
Chairman of LACORS (Local Authorities Coordinators of Regulatory Services) Paul Bettison, said, "The risk to people's health and the threat of fines from the EU leave no excuse for inaction and we need a co-ordinated national approach to policy and improving public awareness."
A large proportion of harmful emissions come from cars and transport, but industrial air pollution from processes such as electricity generation and manufacturing are also a direct threat to public health.
