It is a strange fact that although as many as 20% of British adults suffer from raynauds disease, relatively few know much about the causes of the condition and its pathology.
However, for those living with Raynauds it can be painful and distressing, often to the point of feeling "as if you'd trapped your fingers in the car door", and managing and understanding the disease becomes a day-to-day necessity.
But how can awareness of the condition be raised among the wider public?
One response to this question is Raynaud's Awareness Month, which is run annually by the Raynaud's and Scleroderma Association (RSA).
It seeks to promote understanding of the suffering endured each year, particularly during the winter months, of the tens-of-thousands of British Raynaud's disease sufferers.
An RSA spokesperson comments, "Cold hands are not only a sign that the weather is bitter. They could be a symptom of something more serious. There are at least a dozen conditions which cause chronic cold hands, including scleroderma and lupus. A simple blood test can help to identify any underlying condition.
"For someone with Raynaud's it isn't just a matter of feeling cold. The fingers change colour from white to blue to red, become numb and extremely painful, throb and generally make life an absolute misery."
And, although the exact pathology of the disease is unclear, medical experts do know that it is caused by excessive spasm of the blood vessels in the toes, feet, ears, nose, or fingers. These spasms can be brought on by a number of things, most notably stress or the use of vibrating tools in the workplace.
