Serious head injuries can be fatal and prompt treatment is required to alleviate any swelling on the brain that a head injury can cause. However, the symptoms of a head injury can be similar to that of drunkenness and potentially lead to costly delays in treatment for which head injury compensation may be sought.
A head injury can lead the sufferer to experience disorientation, vomiting, aggressive behaviour and the loss of consciousness also all symptoms of excessive consumption of alcohol. This can make it hard for medical staff to obtain the correct diagnosis for a patient, especially if a closed head injury is suffered where there is no blood to show of the injury and there are no witnesses to advise doctors that a head injury was suffered.
In 2007 a 47-year-old man died after suffering severe head trauma that doctors failed to treat. A series of episodes of medical negligence meant that hospital staff believed the man to be drunk and failed to provide him with the life-saving treatment that could have saved his life.
The man from Failsworth was taken to Casualty after hitting his head during a row outside a bar. Paramedics took the injured man to the Royal Oldham Hospital where they failed to tell hospital staff that he had a head injury.
The man was left to wander in the hospital grounds for 14 hours after hospital staff dismissed his symptoms as drunkenness.
An inquest into the man's death found that he had actually suffered a fracture to his skull and he died from a massive bleed in his brain.
The inquest also heard how reception staff had made up crucial details of him and a nurse had blamed his condition on alcohol.
Commenting on the case, a consultant neurosurgeon said that had the man received treatment, he probably would have survived although he would have suffered an altered mental status and personality change.
Following a verdict of medical negligence, the family were awarded a five-figure compensation sum and new measures were brought in by the hospital to try to prevent similar events happening in the future.
Sadly this is not an isolated case and head injuries are often mistaken for alcohol consumption. A head injury can seriously affect a person's self-reliance as brain damage can lead to a loss of the ability to carry out everyday tasks resulting in the need for a full time carer.
