It is true that someone who has suffered a personal injury may not yet have made the decision to claim compensation or not, and - given this is a specialist area of the law - that person may then wish to seek advice without committing himself or herself to that process.
Under older systems, even this initial advice would have had to be paid for; the time that the solicitor puts in would have been billed on an hourly basis. From the personal injury lawyers' business perspective, it may seem a little less obvious; are they not losing out by issuing free time? We can't speak for all the law firms out there, but the fact there are so many proves that the no win, no fee system does allow this system to work without damaging the firms' financial security.
It is worth remembering that free initial advice may be offered by lawyers working in both no win, no fee arrangements and on a fee-paying basis, and it is worthwhile for any potential claimant to check which system is being used before proceeding with a claim.
