In March 2009 it was announced that UK lawyer, Adrian Desmond, would take over as chairman of the Forum of Complex Injury Solicitors (FOCIS), a forum of pre-eminent medical negligence and personal injury solicitors who support and uphold the highest standards of compensation litigation for clients who have suffered the severest of injuries.

The original format of the forum was developed in 1972 by US attorney Richard Grand as The Inner Circle of Advocates; a group of the most skilled personal injury solicitors who were willing to share information about their work in order to provide litigation of the most technically expert calibre.

In 1997, a similar body was founded in England under the guise of The Richard Grand Society and later rebranded as FOCIS. Membership is limited to 50 and those lawyers must have proved pre-eminence in their field with at least ten years of experience.

Members of the forum aim to:

  • create a common fellowship and knowledge sharing environment amongst personal injury and medical negligence solicitors;

  • encourage greater understanding of the issues that arise for sufferers of serious injury; and,

  • use their expertise to improve the legal system and inform debate.

The new chairman will serve a two year term in the position.
