Sadly, many incidents of industrial injury are caused by forklift truck accidents. In response to this, Mitsubishi made the decision to issue hundreds of high visibility jackets throughout the month of September 2011 for National Forklift Safety Week, improving the drivers' visibility of pedestrians around them.
Forklifts must only be driven by operators who have had the correct training, however, hundreds of injuries occur every year as a result of forklift accidents. It is important that trained operators remain aware of the threat they potentially present to themselves and other workers around them.
Before using a forklift the operator should perform a series of checks as these could prevent themselves or another person becoming seriously injured. All the areas of the forklift should be checked before the key is even inserted into the ignition.
Loose parts and faults on the vehicle could easily cause a personal injury and should be immediately fixed. The brakes, lights and back-up alarm should also be checked when possible.
Once driving the forklift, the operator should treat it with the same respect as a family car or a business truck even though it is not as powerful. It is of equal importance that the operator wears a seatbelt and does not allow any unauthorised persons to drive the forklift.
Just like driving on a main road, forklift truck drivers must be aware of pedestrians and give way at any junctions the factory or site may have. If the driver is unsure whether there are any people around, they should sound their horn to make the vehicle's presence known, especially when going through doors or reversing.
Pedestrians working in an area where forklifts are used should ensure that they do not walk under raised forks and should never stand on the forks themselves. When working around forklifts it is important to remain alert to their presence at all times.
If careful measures are taken with the use of forklift trucks, the chance of industrial injuries occurring is significantly reduced. Hopefully, with these precautions put in place, and the help of companies such as Mitsubishi, industrial injuries will happen less often.
