For one family in 2010, sadly that was the case after their 3-year-old son was left hospitalised after falling into the holiday apartment swimming pool.
The family were staying in a self catering apartment within a 17th century convent near the village of Olias, just outside of Malaga. After turning their back to tend to their younger child, the three-year-old boy fell into the pool unnoticed.
Not realising at first where he had gone, the couple called on the help of the owners of the holiday complex and fellow guests to help them find him. The wife of the complex owner quickly spotted the boy face down in the deep end of the pool and jumped in to pull him out.
Thankfully a doctor and nurse, who also happened to be staying at the apartments, managed to resuscitate the boy while they waited for paramedics to arrive. He was then taken to Materno Infantil Hospital in Malaga where he was put on a ventilator to assist his breathing.
Before booking holiday accommodation, parents should always check to see what safety provisions are in place for children. Parents with young children may wish to consider choosing a hotel or apartment that has an employed lifeguard. Many hotels will have children's clubs where children are entertained in a safe environement.
