Variously, the scammer faked trip and fall accidents on pavements, suing local councils as a result, and made claims against Transport for London who are responsible for the London red route buses. He claimed he had suffered a fractured hip, broken ankle and face, groin, foot and knee injuries
A private company was duped into paying out a personal injury compensation claim of £2,800 for a supposed accident of a similar nature, but it was a claims investigator who blew the whistle on the unemployed man when it was realised that numerous claims had been made under the same name.
Personal injury scammers get a raw deal in court
Although, the conman in this case did plead guilty to eight counts of fraud, the judge took a particularly dim view of the fraudster's actions.
He said, "It was a sustained and carefully planned course of conduct where local authorities did lose and would have lost a large amount of money.
That loss would have landed on the taxpayer and the travelling public. This was a mean, sustained and determined campaign."
The fake claimant was sentenced to 15 months in prison.
