Factory accidents and incorrect footwear for dangerous environment

Many factory accidents are caused when an employer has had the guard on a machine removed and this results in a worker getting caught in the mechanism and suffering severe personal injuries or death.

However, another way in which an employee might sustain an injury in an accident at work is by wearing inappropriate shoes for the job.

If a worker is wearing shoes which are not suitable for the environment they are working in they could sustain burns, have their feet crushed by a heavy weight, or slip or trip over on flooring or ground.

Ideally employers will provide the correct shoes or boots, but if they do not do this they must make sure that workers purchase the footwear suitable for the job so that the risk of an accident and subsequent compensation claim being made is reduced.

Often, the best shoes or boots to be wearing while working in a factory or in any potentially dangerous trade will have good grips on the soles and have a steel toe cap inside them to protect from crush injuries should something heavy be dropped by accident.

Furthermore, wearing footwear which has a zip or Velcro fixing instead of laces will reduce the risk of a worker tripping over an untied lace.

If a worker is employed in a trade which involves molten metals or volatile chemicals which can cause burns, they should wear boots or shoes which are heat resistant, flame retardant, and will protect the worker's skin from harm.

Making a factory accident due to unsuitable shoes
Employers should either provide the correct footwear or make sure that workers purchase the correct shoes or boots for their job.

If a worker does not have the correct footwear they should not be allowed to enter the potentially dangerous environment of a factory until they are wearing safe shoes or boots.

If an employer fails to provide the correct shoes, does not tell workers what footwear they should be wearing, or does not implement health and safety rules, they could have a compensation claim made against them if an employee is harmed as a result.
