Shopping hazards may lead to compensation solicitor's office

Shopping for basic necessities is a job most of us undertake at regular intervals and supermarkets are in towns of all sizes to provide us with everything under one roof. However a trip – literally – to the store can also end in a call to a compensation solicitor.

Although our local shops may be familiar, it is surprising how many hazards they can conceal and, with so many thousands of people passing through the doors each day, a steady stream of accident claims are made by shoppers and their families or friends who have been hurt.

Slips, trips and falls are the most common cause for complaint, especially in the aisles where dropped fruit can leave a slippery mess or the chilled cabinets can leak water ready for the unwary passer-by to slide, perhaps crashing into the display with unhappy results.

There is such a high turnover of goods in a big supermarket that the shelves have to be replenished constantly, and staff doing the filling have to be wary of causing an obstruction with the heavy cages of boxes which need emptying.

The layout of some supermarkets may increase the risk of a fall, if the shelving is too close, the displays awkwardly positioned or obstructions left in gangways ready for the inattentive shopper to have a tumble.

Supermarkets have smooth floors for ease of pushing trolleys but this can mean an uncomfortably hard surface on which to fall and there are metal projections on the edges of shelves which can give a nasty cut if a member of the public is not protected from coming into contact with it.

Tempting displays of goods, especially those on special offer, are put in eye-catching positions to attract purchases but staff who assemble these must have received training to ensure they have placed the goods so that they are within easy reach of customers wanting to buy, yet will not fall on others.
The larger supermarkets often sell quite a range of non-food items and, again, the displays need to be carefully mounted to avoid a risk of harm to shoppers.

Televisions and other electrical goods which are available for demonstrations should be safely connected to a power supply to avoid electrocution or fires and items, such as washing machines, should be placed out of reach of children who could trap fingers in doors.

Supermarkets wish to retain customers to return time after time and service is important to all of them, however, lapses by staff in keeping to commonsense procedures often occurs either through lack of training or supervision by management.

Spillages of food or drink should be cleared quickly and the area marked as hazardous and staff should be made aware of customers' safety when handling stock or displays.
