It is a sad fact that death and serious personal injuries one the UK's roads are not enough to galvanise the government, road safety authorities and the wider community into improving road safety.
In fact, it may be said that in a sometimes cynical, financially-motivated society, pointing out the economic benefits of improved road safety can be one of the chief motivators in ensuring interested parties invest in a successful road safety strategy.
The IAM (Institute of Advanced Motorists) is an important organisation which aims to support "the raising of driving and riding standards and campaigns for increased on-road skills". Its report Deaths and Injuries on Britain's roads reveals that each road accident fatality in Britain costs the UK an average of £1.79 million.
It also revealed that in 2010 Britain's roads were both the safest in Europe and the safest they had been in the country's history. Indeed, in 2009 the number of fatalities was 2,222 – a marked improvement from the 60s and 70s when annual deaths regularly used to reach the 8,000 level. However, the report demonstrated that there was much work to be done in improving the safety of rural roads, which were the site of two-thirds of all fatal and serious personal injuries.
Neil Greig, IAM Director of Policy and Research commented on the financial impact of car accidents and Britain's safety record, "Meeting our casualty reduction targets has meant that deaths on Britain's roads have halved over the past 20 years with 31,000 deaths avoided and savings to the economy of around £50 billion," he said.
"The IAM calculates that achieving similar targets for road deaths by 2020 would save society 2,500 lives and the economy over £4 billion."
"These staggering figures prove conclusively that investing in saving lives on the roads saves the country money, so funding being taken away from this area is a false economy. The important task now is to compensate for these cuts. Public bodies have more freedom than ever on where to spend their resources and we urge them to focus on the benefits to all road users and to the economy of investing in road safety education and awareness, training for younger drivers and riders, and targeted safety improvements to roads."
