APIL and the legislation of the personal injury industry

Personal injury law can be a minefield and some unscrupulous compensation claim firms have, in the past, taken advantage of people's bewilderment and extorted them for all they can get.

There were so-called ambulance chasers who hung around hospital waiting rooms encouraging injured people to make claims, there were companies who promised their clients they wouldn't have to pay a thing but then took an obscene cut of their compensation and then there were firms who bamboozled their customers with so much complicated legal jargon that they didn't have a clue what was going on.

Some such personal injury firms still attempt to operate with these methods but the majority have had to change their ways or have ceased trading altogether. And the reason for this is the presence of APIL.

The Association of Personal Injury Lawyers
APIL (The Association of Personal Injury Lawyers) was set up in 1990 by a small group of solicitors who were fed up with the less than honourable activities of some compensation firms and so wanted to protect the rights of injured people throughout the United Kingdom.

Now with more than 5,000 members, APIL has gone from strength to strength and has become a recognised voice within both the Government and the media. It fights for better laws to protect those who have been hurt in non-fault accidents and provides accreditation to solicitors who specialise in personal injury law.

Those solicitors who are part of APIL agree to abide by its code of conduct and so clients who use them know that they will be treated fairly and openly at all times.

This code of conduct is available on APIL's website at www.apil.com and ascertains that association members will:

  • Put your best interests first.
  • Provide clear, impartial, honest advice about your case.
  • Tell you if you have to pay anything to pursue your case and, if so, how much.
  • Charge you a fair price with no hidden costs if you do have to pay to pursue your case.
  • Explain your legal position in plain language.
  • Act only in your best interests in suggesting a referral to another solicitor if they feel unable to deal with your case.
  • Keep you updated about all aspects of your case.
  • Consider other appropriate remedies as well as financial ones.
  • Not cold call.
  • Only publish advertisements which are accurate and truthful.

By following this code of conduct, APIL accredited personal injury solicitors can ensure that their clients are receiving a fair and comprehensive service and, in turn, the clients know they are being treated fairly at all times.

It is thanks to APIL that the personal injury industry is no longer the dubious place it used to be although some claims firms do still attempt to operate with a distinct lack of morals.
