The seriousness of a head injury can vary from mild to severe, and every year an average of 250 people out of every 100,000 adult individuals in the UK experience some type of head injury resulting in a visit to Accident and Emergency, a number of which may result in the victim making an accident claim online.
This head injury figure represents 10 to 20% of all A&E patients. With the HSE's 2009-2010 statistics indicating that for every 100,000 workers, 101.5 received non-fatal injuries a significant proportion of the 250 A&E cases are likely to have occurred through a lack of care by someone else and, therefore, a damages payment for personal injury suffered could be claimed..
A head injury is defined as being a traumatic injury to a person's head or brain. Depending on the severity of the damage, the recovery period may change from person to person, and the disruption to their lives and their work will differ also.
Spending time resting after brain and head injuries is very important, and for some people being able to make an accident claim online it is important that they can recover the costs of any loss of earnings, stress or pain experienced, from the comfort of their own home.
Mild head injury
More often known as concussion, signs of mild head injury can include vomiting, confusion and blurred or warped vision.
Usually the victim will have suffered a period of unconsciousness. In mild cases, this period of unconsciousness will usually last for less than 30 minutes. Any longer than this and the person is often suffering from moderate or severe head injury.
The victim of concussion may experience amnesia after waking. Memories may be unclear or completely forgotten.
Victims of concussion tend to suffer from loss of memories formed after the accident. This is called anterograde memory loss (retrograde being its opposite), and stops the individual from forming or keeping any new memories.
Grades of mild head injury vary, and victims can suffer from amnesia at many different levels. Recovery may only take a few days, but symptoms could also last the rest of that person's life.
It is always important to remember that brain damage is progressive, and, although a patient may be released from the hospital, they should make an appointment to be seen again in the days after their discharge in case their condition has worsened.
Moderate head injury
A victim of moderate head injury will typically remain unconscious from 30 minutes to six hours, and on waking might report feeling tired, dizzy or have a steadily worsening headache which does not abate. They may find it difficult to talk clearly, think, or remain attentive in some situations. For example, if someone is speaking to them, they may lose their concentration during the conversation.
The victim may experience feelings of concern and also be irritable. Similarly to mild head injury victims, those suffering from moderate head injury may be prone to vomiting, blurred vision and amnesia.
Recovery can be slow, and some symptoms, such as the loss of some memories, may stay with the individual for the rest of their life.
Severe head injury
Just as a person suffering from moderate head injury will normally remain unconscious for longer than the victim of a mild concussion, someone experiencing a severe head injury will usually remain unconscious for more than six hours.
Upon waking, they will typically be prone to the same symptoms listed as occurring after mild or moderate blows to the head, but for a longer length of time or at an elevated level.
The more serious the head injury, the more likely it is that the brain has suffered greater damage. Recovery may involve speech therapy, physiotherapy, cognitive behavioural therapy and even psychotherapy.
Many patients will need to go through at least one of these therapies to help with their rehabilitation.
