Personal injury compensation claims for ice-skaters

As well as more driving accidents the winter brings that old tradition of ice-skating and this can mean an increase in personal injury compensation claims. With crowded ice-rinks full of novice skaters whizzing about collisions and falls are frequent on the ice.

It is the liability of the ice-rink owners to maintain safety on the ice and decrease the likelihood of personal injury. Hourly sessions are usually organised so that there are not too many skaters on the ice at any one time. They should also make sure that the ice is in good skating condition and is resurfaced regularly to prevent it from becoming too slippery. Equipment such as skates should be checked and any loose blades or frayed laces replaced. Any accidents resulting from the owner’s failure to carry out these responsibilities could result in a legitimate claim for personal injury compensation.

Over half of ice-skating falls result in minor bruises and muscle strains and we see keen skaters speedily jumping back up to carry on. However, more serious accidents include knee injuries, ankle injuries, shoulder injuries and back injuries, wrist injuries, leg fractures and dislocated thumbs. The skates themselves are also quite dangerous since the sharp blades that are necessary for cutting through the ice have been known to cause severe lacerations to both the hands and face if left unprotected during a fall on the ice.

Some suggestions for safer ice-skating

  • Wear plenty of warm, comfortable clothing
  • Wear gloves to protect your hands and thick socks to reduce the likelihood of the ice-skates rubbing
  • Make sure the ice is being resurfaced regularly
  • Make sure there are ice-wardens around in case you need their assistance
  • Warm up before getting onto the ice
  • Check that your boots are in good condition, the correct fit and are done up properly
  • Tie laces in double knots and tuck away safely
  • Remove any bags or other items that will make it easy for fellow skaters to grab onto you
  • Keep an eye on other skaters, avoiding anyone that looks wobbly
  • If you fall on the ice tuck your hands, legs and face in quickly
  • Stop skating and leave the ice when tired
