One example of a horrific railway accident occurred on 23rd June 2009 when the U.S capital was brought to a standstill in the height of the rush hour. Two metro trains collided with one another killing nine and injuring 76.
A stationary train in the north-east of the capital was waiting for a clear signal when it was hit from behind by another train. The front section of the second train was catapulted into the air by the force of the train crash and its front section landed on top of the first train, killing the second train driver instantly as well as eight passengers.
The crash happened at the height of the rush hour at 5pm on the red metro line, one of the city's busiest services. The exact cause of the train crash still remains unknown although the second train was one of the oldest in the fleet which was a possible factor in the train's collision.
Not only did the train crash kill nine people and cause severe passenger injuries to seventy-six others, but it is also likely to have cost the US millions of dollars in damages including compensation claim awards for those involved in the crash.
Negligence is being blamed for the second train's failure to stop and other likely factors that influenced the crash include safety system failure, train maintenance failure and driver error. The system that is used to operate the majority of metro trains across Washington DC has been closely scrutinised for any faults as it should have automatically detected when to brake.
A similar computer system is used in the UK to operate all Docklands Light Railway (DLR) trains in London and with thousands of commuters using the service every week, thorough checks of the system have no doubt been made to ensure that the tragedy experienced in Washington is not repeated in the UK.
