Microlog, a major anti-train crash innovation
Recent years have seen the development of one major tool in the fight against train crashes. Microlog is a sophisticated piece of technology created right here in the UK by scientists at Newcastle University.
Smaller than a matchbox, weighing less than ten grams but crammed with four megabytes of memory and a 16-byte microprocessor, Microlog works by fitting to the wheel axles of a train and recording details about any stresses or other abnormal phenomena on the rails.
It then uses satellite technology to send the data back to a GPS centre, which is then able to record information about the location and extent of the abnormality. It can also help provide information about the way certain rails buckle under heat and the interactions between wheels and rails. It is also anticipated that it may lead to safer axle design in the future.
Many experts have predicted that the technology could contribute to much greater levels of safety in the future, lessening the likelihood of train crashes and, in some cases, could even "stop rail disasters".
Lead researcher Dr Rosinki, who developed Mircrolog with the assistance of his 18-year-old son, comments on their important piece of work, "Although data loggers have been used for more than two decades, they have always been relatively big and their use has therefore been limited.
"Microlog is unique because of its miniature size, which allows us greater flexibility and means we can to fit it to smaller components such as train axles.
"The computer software which accompanies it is also extremely sophisticated.
"We have been working over several years to perfect the design and we are confident it has huge potential in a variety of applications, rail safety being just one of them."
Hopefully, its widespread adoption will lead to fewer rail accidents, fewer passenger injuries and fewer passenger injury compensation claims.
