ORR report shows improved train accident outlook
Although train accidents still remain a national concern in the UK, gone are the dark years of the 1950s when it was not uncommon for rail accident fatalities to near, and sometimes even pass, the 100 mark.
However much statistics from bygone decades remain of historical interest, it is the data from today that is of relevance.
That is why all the specialist train accident solicitors on YouClaim's panel firms received the latest railway statistical safety report from the Office of Rail Regulation (ORR) with such keen interest.
While there can be little doubt that safety on the UK's rail network remains a matter of significant concern, the report for calendar year 2007 is notable for portraying an improving rail safety outlook.
Overall, the number of train incidents fell by around 5%, from 1061 in 2006 to 1006 in 2007. This new figure, which includes the number of passenger injuries sustained on rail networks, is undoubtedly an improvement.
Of note too, was the fact that there were a lower number of track buckles and rolling stock failures than in previous years, as well as a marked reduction in the number of broken rails reported, down from 939 to 191.
David Morris, ORR's deputy chief inspector of railways, comments, "The report shows that overall the level of safety on the railways has continued to show some improvement, with a reduction in the number of train incidents in 2007 compared with the previous year.
"We continue to work closely with the industry to make sure they are striving to make the railway safer for everyone concerned.
"ORR will carry on with its planned proactive inspection and investigation work, focusing on priority areas, including track, command and control signalling, level crossings, and worker safety. We will also use our enforcement powers and take appropriate action when necessary."
