Taxi accidents and limiting speed with the ISA

Many people will be familiar with the experience:  riding by taxi in order to get from A to B but quickly discovering the driver is for some reason in a hazardous hurry, risking a taxi accident as he irritably weaves his way through traffic at breakneck speed.

One technology that may militate against this happening is the speed limiter, known as the Intelligent Speed Adapter (ISA).

ISAs are connected to satellite navigation systems and allow drivers or taxi firms to enable a setting that prevents them from travelling over the speed limit in any given area. For example, should a driver fail to slow down in a 30mph zone, the ISA will automatically ensure that he does so.

Furthermore, there is an alternative advisor setting that simply informs a driver when he is travelling above the prescribed speed limit.

With taxi accidents responsible for so many RTAs and personal injury claims in London, the technology is already being trialled by taxis in the capital.

Chris Lines, head of TfL’s road safety unit, comments on the ISA trial, “This innovative technology could help any driver in London avoid the unnecessary penalties of creeping over the speed limit and at the same time will save lives,” he says.

Adding, “We know the technology works and now we want to know how drivers in all types of vehicles respond to it. ISA is intended as a road safety device, but if Londoners embrace this technology we may well see additional benefits, including reduced congestion as a result of collisions and reduced vehicle emissions as drivers adopt a smoother driving style.”

While Andrew Howard, head of road safety at the AA, says that only by trialing the technology can questions of its efficacy by resolved. “Drivers are divided in their views of intelligent speed adaptation. Some hate it, some want it. Many have questions that will be answered only by trials like those being carried out by TfL,” he said.
