Satellite tracking may reduce taxi accident numbers

London Taxi Cab

Satellite tracking of cabs in the United States is aimed at reducing taxi accident numbers as well as guarding the drivers against crime.

Despite strong opposition from drivers in 2010 New York City was the first to fit global positioning system (GPS) receivers in taxis, and other cities were expected to follow suit in a move aimed at safeguarding drivers and passengers.

It was also suggested GPS could be used to track and identify any driver involved in a taxi accident and those who caused passenger injury. A control room could also alert drivers to potential hazards on the road if the car's position was pin-pointed.

Such a move is unlikely to be introduced in the UK in the near future where our cities are so much smaller and fewer taxis are used in proportion. Not only are crimes and road traffic accidents involving taxi drivers a lot lower than the US, but there is a great deal of control already.

Although some small taxi firms use mobile phones to talk to customers, most operate through a central booking office and communicate with two-way built-in radios. All licensed drivers keep in regular contact with their offices, both for their own protection and that of their passengers.

Private hire cabs have to be booked in advance and the destinations specified; even drivers of taxis which are hired by hailing at a railway station or on-street parking bay keep a log of their journeys. Some computerised meters, which show the fare, also register details.

Other security devices, such as internal CCTV systems, are becoming more common fitments in taxi cabs. They can offer continuous recording, with or without sound, so that there is a complete record of every journey. The driver can also be aware of any problems with back-seat passengers, including illness.

Finding a personal injury lawyer after a taxi accident

In some circumstances, both the driver and his passengers may be eligible to make a compensation claim after a taxi accident, for example, if the cab was involved in a vehicle accident where the driver was not at fault but suffered some personal injury.

The experienced lawyers who make up YouClaim's panel are able to advise people throughout the UK and, if appropriate, can represent them in legal proceedings.

Under the no win, no fee system you are guaranteed to receive 100% of all compensation won and you can also rest assured about the professionalism of YouClaim's lawyers as they are accredited by the Solicitors Regulation Authority.
