Passenger safety in taxi accidents comes before drivers' fears

A conflict of interest between the safety of passengers in a potential taxi accident and the safety of drivers who risk being attacked by thugs intent on robbery has been highlighted in Coventry.

Cabbies in the Midlands city were upset when they received letters ordering them to remove metal security grilles from their taxis after two independent organisations found the cages were not meeting safety standards and were a potential risk to passengers.

The drivers said the grilles were necessary to protect and separate them from badly-behaved passengers or those with criminal intent who might cause them personal injury.

A city council spokesman said that, while the concerns of drivers were recognised, the absolute priority was to have safe taxis on the road for passengers.

The council offered drivers the chance to have the metal grilles replaced with polycarbonate screens at a special price and is working with taxi manufacturers to come up with suitable fitments. One of the manufacturers of the black cabs used in the city is Coventry-based LTI.

As the official taxis plying for hire are London-style hackney carriages, no passengers sit next to the driver and those in the passenger cabin should use seat belts to ensure their safety in the event of a taxi crash.

The hand-built vehicles are particularly sturdy and a taxi accident is rare in one of these. However, passengers do have a duty to use the seat belts because if there was a vehicle crash, the amount of a subsequent passenger compensation claim could well be reduced if the passenger had failed to look after himself by fastening the available belt.

However, the taxi driver bears the greater responsibility in maintaining the safety of his vehicle and the carriage of his passengers hence the city council's fears over the metal grilles which could injure the occupants of the taxi.
