Would you hire a cab which you thought was likely to be in a taxi crash? No, of course you wouldn't, but you may do so unwittingly if the driver or his vehicle are not up to specified safety standards.
A random check of taxi cabs in a Leicestershire borough in September 2009 found a number of drivers in breach of their licences.
The operation involving police, Department for Transport inspectors and Oadby and Wigston Borough Council officials saw 17 vehicles inspected.
Mechanical faults on one taxi led to the immediate suspension of the vehicle licence, another cab driver was issued with a notice to get faults rectified and a further five were found to be in breach of licence safety conditions.
Oadby and Wigston Borough Council's senior legal and licensing officer, Gary Waterfield, said, "The council puts great importance on the safety of the public when using taxis and private hire vehicles.
"The holding of regular spot checks such as this, is intended to demonstrate to the taxi and private hire trade that the council will not tolerate those who do not take their obligations to comply with safety measures seriously.
"The checks will also help to reassure the public that the local taxi trade is up to standard."
Even the most safety-conscious company and its drivers can still be involved in a taxi accident and if you are a passenger at the time you might be unfortunate enough to suffer a personal injury or other difficulties in a vehicle accident which was not your fault.
