Signage and school bus accident compensation

In certain parts of the world, including the United States, school buses are painted a particular colour, such as yellow, to ensure that all motorists recognise them and approach with sufficient caution. However, here in the UK, there is no colour-coding requirement for school buses, which, say some campaigners, increases the risk of pupils suffering the kinds of accident injury for which they might claim bus accident compensation.

But, here in the UK, whether in England, Scotland or Wales, there is a requirement for school bus operators to display a sign indicating a bus's status as an active school bus.

Although not as conspicuous or, some would argue, effective as the iconic yellow bus, having a clearly displayed sign indicating school bus status does serve as a safety function. This safety function is twofold. Firstly, it alerts pupils to the fact that the bus is legitimately theirs and, secondly, it helps drivers indicate that a bus is carrying schoolchildren and should be approached with caution, particularly when at and around bus stops.

Indeed, by displaying this sign, a bus driver can save a child's life. It is a well-known fact that if a vehicle hits a child at 40 mph, the child will probably die – however, if speed is reduced to 20 mph, the child has only a one in twenty chance of being fatally injured. Indeed, the value of slowing down is enshrined in Highway Code Rule 207, which identifies schoolchildren as among the most vulnerable pedestrians.

In short, all school buses must be identified as such – failure to do so may result in schoolchildren suffering personal injury and, potentially, the need to proceed with a bus accident compensation claim.

Furthermore, there is concern that some drivers may drive empty or charter buses with the school bus sign still visible. Although this may at first not seem like a serious breach, road safety campaigners point out that incorrectly displaying the school bus sign can devalue its power and cause drivers to lose trust in it.
