Preventing injury to a passenger; a research hero

Research into the best methods of preventing injury to a passenger aboard all types of transport is an exhaustive process which requires dedication and tenacity. One recognised and highly acclaimed exponent of this field of research is Helen Muir, Director of the Cranfield Institute for Safety, Risk and Reliability, and the Professor of Aerospace Psychology in the School of Engineering at Cranfield University.

Passenger Safety research, investigating the psychological factors of passenger behaviour in wide ranging transport settings, was initiated by Professor Muir after the 1985 Manchester air accident. Initial research focused on how the design of aircraft cabins and procedures used by cabin crew influenced the efficiency of passenger evacuations.

Whilst recreating realistic passenger evacuation scenarios proved difficult due to lack of life-threatening conditions, the department introduced cash bonuses for exercise participants in the hope that this would recreate the competitive behaviours which become evident in real emergency evacuation scenes. It proved very effective and a revelation in the field.

Cranfield University's Passenger Research department has unique facilities, including two full scale cabin evacuation simulators, which have led to its recognition as a world leader in the field of passenger injury prevention in an evacuation situation and its research activities extend across a range of passenger and crew safety areas and transport sectors including aviation and rail.

In 2006, Universities UK recognised Professor Muir's research into aircraft accident survival as one of the best 100 discoveries and developments by a university, in the previous 50 years, which had changed the world.

Professor Muir has also received a number of prestigious awards for her passenger safety research.

In 2008 the Airbus Human Factors Award from the International Flight Safety Foundation and the L. Welch Pogue Award for lifetime achievement in Aviation from Aviation Week and International Association of Transport Aircraft (IATA) were both awarded to Professor Muir. The L.Welch Pogue Award is given to an individual considered a visionary and a pre-eminent leader of contemporary aviation and it was the first time it was been given to anyone from the UK.

The Aviation Week citation of Helen Muir read: "She has used her scientific training in psychology to establish at Cranfield the only university department in the U.K. Specialising in Aviation Psychology and to develop a unique methodology for conducting research into factors influencing survival in accidents.

"The expertise and facilities that have been developed at Cranfield have led to its recognition as the focus for European cabin safety research and collaborative programs with manufacturers and regulatory authorities, both in Europe and North America."
