Injury to a passenger will need proper reporting

In the event of an injury to a passenger most customer transit companies will have a standardised procedure for their care and for the reporting of all personal injury accidents.

For instance, an accident reporting form for a cruise liner or a passenger ferry accident would probably include all the details of the vessel, the nature of the accident, the personal injuries suffered by the passenger and some other more pertinent details specific to an accident aboard a passenger carrying vessel.

For instance the reporting forms may include:

  • names and details of crew member witnesses to the accident;
  • names and details of passenger witnesses to the accident;
  • place of accident on the vessel;
  • surface conditions of the deck or floor;
  • nature of surface, eg. deck/stairs, non-slip/carpeted;
  • weather conditions, both at the time of the accident and from the time of passenger embarkation up to the time of the accident;
  • details of measures used to alert passengers to any relevant hazard, eg. tannoy announcements, warning notices, special paints etc;
  • was the passenger dressed appropriately for the conditions;

Such forms will be filled in and signed by the person in charge of passenger safety aboard the ship as they would for a train accident, plane accident or bus accident. The forms will be used as evidence in the event of a health and safety investigation and by insurers in the event of an injury to a passenger which sees a passenger compensation claim.

In the event of suffering a personal injury accident as a passenger, it is important that the victim or their friends and family gather as much information as possible about the accident, preferably including; pictures, witness statements and contact details, and information regarding conditions and circumstances surrounding the accident. This information will be invaluable to a personal injury solicitor in the event of a compensation claim.
