Railway accidents on England's light rail and tram systems

Travel by light rail and tram systems in England is an increasingly attractive option to many commuters, with the number of light rail and tram journeys up by 5.5% in 2010. However, this form of transport is not without its risks and any traveller who sustains personal injury as a result of a railway accident on the light rail and tram network may be able to claim compensation.

The growth in journeys

As the number of users increases, so does the need for ensuring health and safety. In 2010/11 there were 196.5 million passenger journeys made on England's light rail and tram system – the highest ever number.

Those systems included in these statistics include the Blackpool Tramway, Croydon Tramlink, Docklands Light Railway, Manchester Metrolink, Midland Metro, Nottingham Express Transit, Sheffield Supertram and Tyne and Wear Metro. The fact that the London Underground and other specialised light rail systems are not included goes to show just how reliant much of England has become on its light rail and tram systems.

Even with the London Underground unaccounted for, London is responsible for more than 50% of the UK's light rail and tram journeys, with the Docklands Light Rail accounting for 40% of journeys and Croydon's Tramlink another 14%.

Revenue and accidents

The fact that these systems are enjoying increased numbers of passenger and record levels of revenue mean that the level of safety is also on the rise.

However, railway accidents, from slips, trips and falls to collisions and whiplash injuries, do still occur on England's light rail and tram network. Any passenger who suffers such an accident may be entitled to claim compensation for their injuries.
