The risk of a claim from an injured passenger after an accident is a factor that passenger transit companies take very seriously. Customer safety should always be of paramount importance to airlines, train companies and bus providers and their safety policies and risk assessments should be thorough and regulation adherent so as to avoid passenger injuries at all costs.
Passengers demand this level of safety consciousness from their travel company as a matter of unswerving certainty. However in April 2010, when air passenger safety was put into serious question by the eruption of an Icelandic volcano, many travellers and airlines who were grounded as a result questioned the reasoning behind an almost Europe wide blanket-ban on air travel.
Eruption of Eyjafjallajokull Volcano in Iceland grounds European air passengers
The second eruption of Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajokull occurred on 14th April 2010 causing widespread fears for the safety of jet airplanes flying in European airspace.
A huge plume of silica based ash had been ejected from the volcano into the upper atmosphere of the earth and was carried on air currents towards Europe.
Amid fears that silica in the ash would melt to form a glass like substance on the turbines of aircraft jet engines, subsequently causing them to fail and planes to crash, aircraft advisory specialists called for a widespread flight ban over most of Europe.
Millions of passengers around the world were stranded as a result of the flight ban which began on or around the 15th April and lasted in many countries until 20th April, causing many travellers to try to seek other forms of transport, including ferries, hire cars and buses.
Many of the marooned air passengers and the airlines themselves, who lost billions in revenue and faced many claims for refunds and costs, questioned the validity of the air ban suggesting that agencies had been over-cautious in their decision to ground so many flights for so long.
However, to prevent the occurrence of injured passengers, and to maintain air safety, many experts attempted to reinforce the message that the flight ban had been the safest thing to do and ultimately may have saved hundreds of lives.
