According to accident research, 80% of plane accidents are survivable. Fire is one of the biggest causes of fatalities in plane crashes as many passengers are knocked unconscious in the descent and are unable to escape once the plane is on the ground.
In 2010, Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. and Air France KLM Group began introducing seatbelt-mounted airbags in their economy-class cabins to help keep passengers conscious in the event of a plane crash so that they may escape any subsequent fire.
U.S Regulations introduced in October 2009 state that all aircraft built in the country must conform to standards designed to keep passengers conscious through an impact involving deceleration at 16 times the force of gravity.
These regulations, which were subsequently to be introduced throughout Europe, involve adding airbags onto some types of cabin seats, to be stored in the seatbelt and deployed within 90 milliseconds in the event of a crash.
The new regulations were likely to mainly affect economy seats which have rigid shells, making them more likely to inflict serious head trauma than softer first, or business class seats.
A study by the UK's Civil Aviation Authority for the U.S Federal Aviation Administration in 2005 concluded that stronger seats and better restraints could have prevented 62 fatalities in the 25 impact-related accidents analysed in the study.
The specially fitted airbag seat belts cost around $1,200 dollars as opposed to $25 for a regular seatbelt. Between 2001, when the belt was launched, and 2010 the airbags had already been sold to more than 50 carriers including Singapore Airlines Ltd, US Airways Group Inc, Emirates, Japan Airlines Corp. and Swiss International Air Lines AG.
With air safety regulations becoming stricter, airbags on planes are likely to become an everyday sight ensuring that flying remains one of the safest forms of travel.
