Pillion passenger injury rise needs to be addressed

In the five years from 2005 to 2010 there was an alarming 57% rise in the number of accident compensation cases taken out against motorcyclists. According to insurance companies, such as AVIVA, the major factor behind the rise in the claim rate was attributable to one thing: pillion passenger injury.

This was supported by the pattern of pillion passenger statistical evidence, which showed there had been an increase in the number of riders taking passengers.

A spokesperson with AVIVA commented, "These are certainly sobering statistics. We believe that the upturn in bike claims, particularly bodily injury claims, is a consequence of more riders opting to carry pillion passengers.

"Congestion and fuel costs are certainly issues of concern for all motorists, so taking the bike out rather than the car can save on time and money. However, carrying a passenger can affect the way a bike handles in relation to stopping distance, cornering and steering, so we are advising riders to take extra care, and to seek expert help if not completely confident."

News of the alarming rise in the number of motorcycle accident pillion passenger injury cases led to safety groups calling for increased awareness of the safety needs of those who ride pillion, with many offering advice on the wearing of helmets and protective safety clothing.

Additionally, riders must take steps to ensure that their mirrors, suspension and tyre pressure are adjusted suitably for the different dynamics caused by having a passenger.

A spokesperson from YouClaim's no win, no fee motorbike injury claim panel commented, "Both riders and pillion passengers must take a role in ensuring their safety while on the road. Things like the seating position of a passenger can make a real difference to the safe handling of a bike.

"Also, it is particularly important that extra precautions are taken when children are riding pillion, such as taking regular stops, never travelling for too long and ensuring that the child can easily reach foot pegs."
