Personal injury solicitors help Belfast bus crash victims make claims

Driving a bus carries huge responsibility, as does driving any motorised vehicle on public roads, but, as many personal injury solicitors know, when a bus is involved in what would be an innocuous minor bump for a car, the consequences can be felt to a far greater magnitude.

Belfast bus mounts kerb – dozens injured
If a car driver commits a minor driving error, such as mounting the kerb, there is little risk of anyone suffering a personal injury. However, when a double-decker bus suffers the same error of judgment on behalf of the driver the outcome can be catastrophic.

In August 2011 a double-decker bus, carrying 35 passengers, had been travelling towards Belfast city centre, when it mounted a kerb outside Central Station. The bus toppled onto its side causing many of the passengers to be injured and become trapped.

Emergency services were called and cutting equipment had to be used in order to free the passengers, some of whom had suffered serious personal injuries.

Victims of the bus crash were taken to four different hospitals around the city. In total, 31 passengers, including a pregnant woman, a baby, and two children were among those requiring treatment for cuts, bruises, suspected spinal damage and shock.

By October 2011, three quarters of the passengers had made passenger accident claims for compensation through personal injury solicitors.

Questions regarding the personal injury claims were raised in the Irish Assembly and the Transport Minister revealed that, at that time, 26 claims had been submitted.

Dolores Kelly, SDLP MLA for Upper Bann, commented at the time, "While we have concerns generally about the compensation culture in the North, anybody who has been injured in the course of an accident is entitled to compensation.

"It was quite a shocking incident and I've no doubt that many of the passengers suffered from shock and physical injury. Where that is the case, then they are entitled to make claims and I would hope those claims are resolved quickly so that people can get the help they require as soon as possible."

The company which owned the bus confirmed that the DVLA investigation had revealed no mechanical failure in respect of the vehicle, however, police investigations were ongoing.

Personal injury solicitor help for bus crash compensation
When someone is hurt as a passenger, whether it happens while using a bus, train, tram, plane or taxi, if the traveller did not cause the accident, then there is a good chance they will be able to claim personal injury compensation from the company, or individual, which is responsible for providing the service.
