High speed train services have revolutionised rail travel making trips to mainland Europe just a simple train ride away. However, with such quick speeds, invariably when train accidents do happen, they involve large numbers of passenger injuries and fatalities.
In February 2010, two trains in Belgium collided in a head on collision which resulted in a number of seriously injured passengers and fatalities. The crash occurred after a slow commuter train failed to stop at a red light and crashed straight into a high speed train travelling in the opposite direction.
The crash occurred just nine miles south of Brussels and the force from the crash was so strong that the express train went deep into the front of the other, tipping the train into the air and into the overhead power cables. More than 150 people were injured in the train crash and several were confirmed as dead on scene.
A witness of the horrific crash, speaking at the time of the incident, described how the driver of the slow commuter train sounded the train's claxon and pulled on the emergency brake before jumping free from the train.
"To start with, the driver hit the claxon hard. A fraction of a second later he used the emergency brake, then the driver jumped from his cabin to the locomotive gangway," he said.
It was not immediately reported if the train crash was due to mechanical failure, human error or whether wintry conditions were primarily responsible for the crash.
Luc Lallemand, vice-chairman of Infabel, which manages Belgium's railway network, admitted that the crash "could have been avoided" if both trains had been fitted with an automatic braking system.
Passengers of the train crash might well be eligible for passenger compensation which could help pay for any specialised care or equipment they need due to the injuries they may have sustained in the accident.
