Passenger injury and the integrity of second-hand car seats

The risk of children sustaining passenger injury in car crashes can be minimised by the use of an undamaged child car seat. However, in 2009 some disturbing news emerged about the laxity of some parents in providing this protection.

According to a survey by Sainsbury's car insurance, around 713,000 car seats, or 14% of all those currently on the road, have been bought second-hand or passed down from a friend or family member.

Although this might seem like a useful way for families to save money, the truth is that it is impossible to guarantee the safety of second-hand car seats.

This reality was confirmed by statisticians who believe that around 5% of all car seats may need replacing because of damage sustained in car accidents or other circumstances.

Unfortunately, it is difficult to enforce any law that might help prevent children sustaining passenger injury in second-hand car seat-related incidents; ebay, the online auction site, frequently sells second-hand car seats to parents hoping to save money.

A Sainsbury's car insurance spokesperson comments on the survey, "If a child car seat has already been involved in an accident, it's extremely difficult to know if it is still functioning properly and that it doesn't have any hidden faults. This means that if you already know that the seat has prevented a child from being injured or if you have bought it second hand and therefore can't be sure of its history, you could be strapping your child into a seat that provides little or no protection.
"Even if a child car seat is a present from friends or family, as is the case with around 669,000 (13 per cent) child car seats, unless they are brand new as opposed to hand-me-downs, you cannot be 100 per cent sure of their safety."
