Major passenger accident averted after cow derails tourist train

Travelling around Australia is often a once in a lifetime opportunity so the last thing you want to happen is to suffer a passenger accident during your trip. As well as potentially ruining a trip that you have spent time saving for, suffering a personal injury abroad is often stressful and traumatic as you are in unfamiliar surroundings far from your home and your support network.

A train accident in 2009 involving one of Australia's most popular tourist trains had the potential to be really serious after it derailed after hitting a cow in the outback. Although no passengers were hurt in the accident, the incident could have caused serious personal injuries if the train had been travelling at a faster speed.

The train, known as The Ghan, operates through Australia's harsh central desert, offering passengers breathtaking views of the Outback's magnificent landscape. The train was on its 1,850-mile (2,979- kilometre) run between the Northern Territory capital of Darwin and the South Australia state capital of Adelaide when it crashed into the cow. The locomotive ran off the tracks, but there was no damage to the train.

Due to the heavy weight of the train and the speed they travel at, it is impossible for them to stop suddenly. This means that obstructions on the tracks such as animals are potentially lethal.

Although shaken, the passengers all managed to evade personal injury and resumed their journey a couple of days later when a new train was brought up to replace the derailed Ghan.

Thankfully, this incident was free from any passenger injuries. Whilst train crashes are relatively rare, they do have the potential to be devastating due to the number of passengers they can transport.

If you have been injured in a train crash or in another form of crash where you were not driving, you may be able to make a personal injury compensation claim.
