Considering the demographic of cruise ship holidaymakers, it is not surprising to learn that the vast majority of cruise ship passenger accident claims are made by people over the age of 65.
However, the fact, that cruise ship passengers are older and generally therefore more susceptible to injury does not in any way lessen the duty of care owed by operators.
In fact, given the high average age of cruise ship passengers, it places an especial emphasis on the obligation of operators to ensure that frail and elderly passengers are protected from illness and injury as much as is reasonably possible.
Despite this emphasis, there are sometimes failures. For example, a 2010 Norwegian study, which was carried out by the Institute of Medicine, University of Bergen, Department of Occupational Medicine and Haukeland University Hospita,l found that over a three-year period the median age of cruise ship accident injury victims of 72.
Furthermore, the same study found that a surprising proportion, 12.5%, of injuries, was classified as serious (requiring hospitalisation of requiring more than two weeks recovery time).
In keeping with general accident figures for older people, slip, trip and fall accidents were by far the most common cause of injury, being responsible for 44.8% of accidents aboard and 69.4% of those ashore.
The study also provided the following interesting figures: "Most victims (65.3%) suffered injuries aboard, 3.6% on tenders, and 31.1% ashore – the most common accident locations aboard were cabins (20.1%) and bathrooms (13.4), and ashore, streets (29.6%) and buses (16.1%)."
The study concluded that, given the risks, it is essential for ships to have well-equipped medical rooms and competent staff aboard to respond promptly and effectively to the full range of possible passenger accident injuries.
