Deadly US train crash and alleged mobile phone use

In September 2008 a train crash in Los Angeles, USA claimed the lives of at least 25 people and injured more than 130 of its 222 passengers. The driver of the train, who died in the railway accident, was alleged to have been using a mobile phone to send text messages 22 seconds before the deadly collision.

The train crash occurred at 16.32, local time, on Friday 12th September 2008, when a commuter train failed to stop before entering a horseshoe-shaped piece of single line track and collided with an oncoming freight train.

Initial reports suggested that the train driver had made numerous texts during his working shift on the day of the fatal accident, including some just moments before, and speculation was made that the driver had not seen a red-light signal before entering the curved piece of track. However, further witness reports stated that the signal in question had remained green.

Following the mobile phone allegations, US Federal regulators issued an emergency order banning the use of mobile phones and electronic devices by rail workers during their shifts. According to the Railroad Administration most US railway companies had internal regulations prohibiting electronic devices from being used at work, but admitted that they were not well enforced. It was hoped that the Federal ban would make employers enforce the regulations more assiduously.

The Railroad Administration, issuing the ban, cited six train crashes between 2000 and 2006, where the use of mobile phones had been implicated; four of them resulted in fatalities.

It was stated in the report, "These obviously unsafe practices reflect the powerful influence of pervasive use of cell phones and other electronic and electrical devices."

According to UK railway employees the prohibition of mobile phone use for train drivers has been in the Rail Safety and Standards Bureau train driver's Rule Book for some years.
