When a road traffic accident involves a large vehicle such as a coach, there is a greater risk that other road users will have suffered severe personal injury and that more passengers will have been hurt due to the large capacity for seating which coaches have.
Whereas in car accidents there are usually only a small number of people who could be harmed in a collision if just two vehicles are involved, in a coach crash many more people could sustain personal injury even if there are still only two vehicles involved.
As well as the increased number of people who may be affected by a coach accident, victims may suffer different types of injuries to car passengers due to the size of the vehicle they are travelling in and the risk that some people may have been standing in the aisle at the time of impact.
Furthermore, in coaches there is often a different mentality amongst passengers which sometimes means that they do not wear the seatbelts provided. This can lead to whiplash or head injuries which may not have been suffered had they been passengers in a car and felt a greater need to use the seat restraints.
Seat belts should always be worn when provided, no matter what size vehicle is being travelled in. Although individuals may feel safer in a coach, they are not immune from suffering a road traffic accident.
Although it is the coach driver who may be directly responsible for an accident, it is the coach company who is likely to pay compensation to personal injury victims if their claims are successful.
A coach company should make sure that all of its drivers are qualified to drive the size of vehicle they are in charge of, have received all necessary training, and behave in a safe and considerate manner on the roads.
If you have suffered personal injury as a coach passenger or as another road user involved in a coach collision, you could be entitled to make a claim for your pain and any loss of earnings.
