Making an accident claim after an injury to a passenger

With the advance of technology and navigation devices, many drivers are becoming reliant on their satellite navigation systems to find their way around. While they are a fantastic aid, the devices have been criticised for the distraction they cause and have been blamed for several road accidents. In December 2009, a driver distracted by his sat nav caused injury to a passenger after he crashed the bus into a low bridge.

The bus accident occurred after the driver of the double-decker crashed into a railway bridge while following his sat nav. The bus driver was carrying 52 schoolchildren and their teachers to a museum visit when the bus crashed into the bridge, tearing the vehicle's roof off. A total of 17 children and teachers were taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary for treatment although none of the injured passengers were seriously hurt.

Firefighters who attended the scene said the young passengers had only escaped serious injury because they were so small.

The 25-year-old driver was sentenced at Leicester Magistrate's court after pleading guilty to driving without due care and attention. He pleaded that he did not know the area and was using a sat nav, and had been told by a teacher he was going in the right direction.

Passenger accidents relating to satellite navigation systems are rare as most bus drivers know their route and so have no need for them. However, there have been many reports of car and commercial vehicle drivers who have suffered a car accident after being distracted by a navigation device.

While sat navs have certainly become an essential tool for the modern motorist, they can affect the driver's concentration leading to potentially serious traffic accidents.
