One of the most important steps a bus company can carry out to avoid passenger injuries and potential bus crash compensation claims is to perform rigorous safety inspections.
Without such inspections, defective and unsafe buses may be in service, thereby presenting a serious safety hazard to both other road users and the passengers that they are intended to safely ferry.
However, questions may sometimes be asked about the integrity of inspections, particularly when bus companies may be averse to responding appropriately to negative inspection results, often because of concerns about the financial impact of taking reparative safety action.
The most serious type of defect a safety inspection can uncover is known as the "PG9 notice". A PG9 is indicative of serious defect which is deemed to "affect the roadworthiness of the vehicle and renders it unsafe". In effect, this means that the bus must be withdrawn from service until which time the defect has been suitably addressed – a costly scenario to the bus company.
An industry insider comments, "Typical PG9 defects include faulty handbrakes or failures in the steering and central braking systems, all of which can cause accidents."
However, the same insider believes that some bus companies are failing to act on safety inspections, at considerable risk to passengers.
Of one London-based bus company he worked for, he says, "When I raised my concerns [about PG9 defects] within the company, managers did not act. I believe they did not do so because taking buses off-road for repairs would cost them money."
If proven true, this action would constitute negligence and if, indeed, passengers were to sustain accident injuries as a result, it is very likely that there would be strong grounds for successful bus crash compensation claims.
Claim 100 per cent compensation for a bus accident
Although bus travel is generally safe and the vast majority of bus journeys are made without any passengers suffering personal injury, it is also true that the negligent actions of drivers or bus companies do sometimes result in passengers being injured.
In such circumstances, it is the civil right of those affected to claim bus crash compensation for pain, suffering, lost earnings and medical expenses.
