The importance of Passenger Focus' role is underlined by the amount the Department for Transport spend on funding the body, currently £5.6 million a year.
Public concerns about the interests of bus users falling under Passenger Focus' audit are manifold. Foremost among these are fears that it will lead to buses replacing trains on the lighter branch lines. A simple reflection on the fact that government subsidisation on rail currently stands at £6 billion a year compared to £2 billion a year for bus routes makes these fears understandable.
Others worry that the broadened interests of Passenger Focus will lead to railway safety being marginalized, potentially leading to more train crashes.
Passenger Focus used to be known as the Rail Passengers Council but was rebranded in 2008.
Its lists its five major goals as being:

- Influencing major long-term decisions that affect rail passengers
