A cruise is supposed to be a relaxing and enjoyable experience to allow you to forget about everyday stresses. However, when something goes wrong, and you have to claim for cruise ship compensation, what should have been a relaxing holiday can soon turn into a nightmare.
Thanks to modern technology and better boat designs, capsizes these days are thankfully rare. Unfortunately, they do still occasionally happen and often with tragic consequences.
In October 2009, a pleasure boat accident in Hekkady, India, resulted in the drowning of 42 of the vessel's 76 passengers after their boat overturned in the middle of a cruise around a popular wildlife sanctuary.
Basic safety measures such as lifeboats and life jackets were not provided on the boat which may well have led to such a high death toll. As the boat was also a new design, it is unclear whether a trial run had been carried out with the ship carrying a full load before the boat was allowed to be used to carry passengers. A lack of training resulted in less than half of the passengers being rescued despite the calm waters surrounding the accident site.
The driver of the boat, who was also injured in the tragedy, told reporters that he had steered the fibreglass boat only four times before the accident.
He told reporters, "If the boat was made of wood, this tragedy might have not occurred. I told the passengers not to crowd on one side. They did not listen. I lost control of the boat and it turned upside down".
The Kerala Government admitted the safety lapses that contributed to the accident and has since installed proper systems for ensuring that every passenger wears a life jacket. The Chief Minister announced personal injury compensation of Rs.500,000 each to the families of the deceased and a full inquiry into the accident to ensure nothing like it happens again.
The incident highlights the importance of ensuring any form of transport you travel in, whether on holiday or at home, has the necessary safety equipment. Any boat, no matter how big or small, should provide life jackets as standard and on larger vessels, life boats should also be provided.
Although safety measures are much more stringent in the UK, safety checks should always be made whenever you first board a vessel, no matter how short the journey or how confident you are of your swimming ability.
