Hard economic times, such as 2009's recession, inevitably lead to a tightening of purse strings in practically all areas of life. However, there is no such room for such savings on the UK's rail network, as cutbacks can lead to dangerous compromises of safety may have the potential to cause railway accidents.
The Office of Rail Regulation recently announced that Network Rail, the body responsible for managing the infrastructure of the UK's railways, must seek to make spending cutbacks of 22% by 2014. However, these cutbacks have been criticised by the Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT), who say that "massive pressure to get things done more cheaply" could result in catastrophic consequences for rail passenger and worker safety.
As a result, RMT representatives have written to Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon urging him to reverse the decision.
A spokesperson with RMT commented, "As a result of the savings they have deferred 28% of the 2009 renewal plan. This massive squeeze on finances can already be seen on the ground. Such cost-cutting raises fundamental safety questions."
Yet Network Rail have retorted that RMT are adopting an alarmist approach to the savings, claiming that they will not increase the railway accident risk and are instead only designed to increase spending efficiency.
A Network Rail spokesman says, "Network Rail never compromises on safety and for the union to suggest otherwise is simply scaremongering. We have no plans to cut maintenance work or line inspections and only non-essential renewals will be affected by the efficiencies we have been asked to achieve."
