Britain is a nation of motorists in danger of driving themselves to distraction. That is the picture presented by the Royal Automobile Club (RAC), which, in a survey of 1,109, found that 39% of drivers become distracted by a variety of in-cab hazards. What the survey does not detail, however, is just how much insurance companies are forced to pay in compensation for road traffic accidents caused by distraction.
What we do know is that official government figures show a 50% rise in the number of car crash fatalities caused by in-vehicle distraction - up from 50 in 2005 to 75 in 2007.
Surprisingly, a high percentage of drivers find themselves being distracted by the very tools that are meant to aid the driving experience; 20% said they had their concentration stolen by the warning lights on the dashboard and 40% said GPS systems and shifted their focus enough to compromise their road safety.
Unsurprisingly, mobile phones were reported as a common distraction, particularly amongst younger drivers, who were the group most affected by distraction, with 55% saying they had become "seriously distracted" while behind the wheel.
And there are those who worry that, unless more is done to combat the problem, there will be a surge in the numbers of claims for compensation for road traffic accidents caused by distraction. An RAC spokesperson comments, "Legislation to limit certain distractions is in place, but it's evident that many of the government's messages are not getting through to motorists."
"You only have to consider the number of motorists that continue to text and drive to see that greater awareness of how to use in-car technology responsibly is needed."
