Coach accident compensation and motorway bridges

Coach accident compensation can give crash victims the financial support they need to access specialist treatment and / or equipment that they may require to rehabilitate after a serious accident. Due to the sheer volume of passengers they can hold, coach accidents unfortunately often involve high numbers of casualties.

Using most of the UK's busy motorways, coaches are vulnerable to the same hazards as other road users. Motorway bridges are notorious places for people to throw things from. Extremely dangerous and against the law, this practice has led to many crashes over the years as motorists are either hit by the thrown objects or crash trying to avoid them.

In January 2010, a pair of girls throwing snowballs off the top of a motorway overpass, caused £3,500 worth of damage to a National Express coach and endangered the safety of all onboard as well as the other road users around them.

En route to London, the coach was hit on its way along the M4 by two large snowballs which smashed through the windscreen sending shards of glass over the driver and passengers. The coach had 57 passengers on board at the time of the incident, over half of which were Swiss school children. Although none of the passengers were injured in the incident, passengers seated at the front of the coach were covered in glass, snow and ice and the driver suffered cuts on the back of his knuckles where the glass shards hit him.

If one of the snow balls, which were described as being as large as the base of a snowman, had hit the driver in the face, the situation could have been a lot worse as he might have lost control of the vehicle.

Although it was not immediately reported if the girls responsible were caught, they would have faced criminal prosecution if found guilty of the offence. While limited compensation, if any, is likely to be gained from the perpetrators, if the coach had been hit by debris that had fallen from the bridge, the coach driver and the coach's passengers may have been eligible to make a compensation claim against the Highways Agency who are responsible for keeping the UK's network of motorways safe.

Some motorway bridges now have safety barriers along them to prevent anything from being thrown onto the motorway. A motoring survey compiled by Autoglass in November 2009 found that 94% of motorists want more preventative action taken to prevent things being thrown from bridges whether in the form of barriers or CCTV. If such measures are carried out, coach crashes and other road accidents caused by items thrown onto the motorway could be avoided.

If you have been involved in a coach crash that was not your fault, you could be eligible for compensation.
