Bus accidents with cyclists - riders and drivers beware

In late 2009, a sudden flurry of bus accident reports caused worries for cyclists as they involved severe personal injury for road users on two wheels who appeared suddenly vulnerable.

One cyclist in London died from her bus accident injuries after an 11 day fight-for-life. She had been cycling through Holborn, central London when she was struck by a double decker bus. Her death brought the toll in London to 12 cyclists that year who had died after a cycling accident.

Meanwhile, only a few days later, in Aberdeen, another young woman received severe head injuries when her bike collided with a coach.

Although details of both accidents were largely unreported, what was apparent from both reports, and from many similar that occurred throughout the year, was that cyclists and buses don't mix.

Cycling in a busy town centre is always hazardous and, likewise, drivers of large vehicles such as buses, coaches and delivery vans need to be extremely road aware so as to avoid pedestrians and cyclists who can remain hidden from their view until it is, unfortunately, too late.

Bus drivers are required to stay alert, use their mirrors effectively and to be aware of other road users at all times. If these considerations are adhered to, as well as speed limits and general rules of the road, most bus accidents with cyclists should hopefully be avoided.

Cyclists can also help themselves avoid a road traffic accident, by wearing high visibility clothing, using lights in dark conditions and by not taking unnecessary risks while using the road in a heavy traffic situation.

Further, in the event of an accident a cyclist who is not wearing a safety helmet and later makes a claim for personal injury compensation may find that by not wearing appropriate safety equipment their case may be compromised - not to mention the fact that they run a greater risk of receiving head injury if they choose to shun a cycle helmet.
