A bus company's insurer may be liable to pay bus accident compensation in the event that it or one of its drivers causes other passengers or other road users to suffer injury.
All road users need to take care, whether drivers, cyclists, motorcyclists or pedestrians – bus drivers, however, need to be especially vigilant about safety. After all, given the size and weight of buses and the sometimes large numbers of passengers being carried, even a single moment of carelessness or recklessness by a bus driver has the potential to cause devastation to many lives.
Running red lights
It is never a good idea to run a red light. In fact, aside from those involved in exceptional emergency situations, no road user is entitled to ever disregard a red traffic light signal.
The consequences of running a red light can be catastrophic for buses. For example, in 2009 a bus driver in London accidentally ran a red light and collided with a tram, killing a passenger and injuring four others – an investigation showed that the traffic lights were broken and were appearing to show green. Those injured later went on to claim bus accident compensation.
Ignoring level crossing lights and gates
In 2011 a bus driver was banned from driving after his decision to ignore warning lights and plough through a level crossing left more than 20 passengers at risk of suffering injury.
The driver's actions led a police spokesperson to say that "drivers who willingly flout the law and place themselves and others in danger should be in no doubt that if caught doing so, they will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."
Following a similar incident the same year, this time in Southampton, a Network Rail spokesperson commented, "Motorists that jump the lights or smash into barriers as they try and beat them coming down can cause great disruption and cost to the network. Crossings are safe to use when used correctly, but misuse can prove fatal. By trying to save a few seconds, you could end up seriously hurt or losing your life."
