Getting compensation for a paragliding accident on holiday

Paragliding can be an exhilarating experience and is a fantastic way of getting brilliant views of an area. However like all extreme sports, it is not without risk and a paragliding accident on holiday can be devastating.

Most people try out paragliding while on holiday abroad where the experience may be unregulated and safety checks of the operator may not be as stringent as those in the UK. In 2010, a 50-year old British man died while paragliding in Turkey after his safety harness snapped.

The family man from Wivenhoe was paragliding in tandem with his daughter at the popular resort of Side in Turkey when the accident occurred. The man fell 50 metres onto the beach where he died instantly of his injuries.

Speaking about the incident, the deceased's daughter said:
"It took a few moments before I realised what was going on. Then it seemed to take forever to get me down. Dad was lying on the beach below and I was still dangling above."

A criminal investigation into the incident was launched and the wife of the deceased man vowed to make a compensation claim against the tour operator after police had concluded their findings.

A witness at the scene of the accident said that workers hid the defective harness which had caused the fall immediately after the incident to try to prevent the authorities discovering the cause of the accident.

The father and mother had been on a family holiday with their 25-year-old daughter, who was with him before he died; their 22-year-old son and his girlfriend.

The incident follows several paragliding accidents in Turkey in the past couple of years.

Holiday makers who wish to try paragliding or other extreme sports should always do their research on the operator before making a booking.
