Oil rig accidents are thankfully rare due to the stringent safety procedures set in place on the rigs. However, due to the volatile nature of the materials being extracted, when accidents do happen, they are often catastrophic and can cause multiple casualties and injuries.
Turbulent weather is one of the biggest threats to oil rigs and in the past has caused the collapse and sinking of several major rigs and the death of hundreds of workers. The fragile structure of oil platforms mean that strong winds or waves can be enough to topple them over which can lead to drowning and serious personal injuries.
Well over a hundred workers can man an oil rig at any time. With no easy means of escape, an oil rig accident will often result in high casualties and fatalities. A fail-safe escape route is often therefore the only means of survival for those trapped on a debilitated or burning rig. This includes enough life boats for all workers, life jackets and emergency snares to aid the rescue of oil rig accident victims.
An oil rig accident in Mexico City in 2007 is a prime example of the necessity of highly durable safety equipment that is tough enough to handle the ferocious waves and strong winds that can be experienced out at sea.
When a drilling rig hit an oil platform in stormy weather in the Gulf of Mexico, workers took refuge in the covered life rafts that were kept on the oil rig. However, the rafts were no match for the 25-foot waves and many of the life rafts sank.
One survivor speaking of their ordeal said, "The life rafts didn't hold up under the force of the waves. They broke up, at least the one I was on, little by little, until the raft sank, and all my co-workers went into the sea."
Despite the best efforts of rescuers, at least 18 workers were killed in the oil rig accident, some of whom might have been saved had they had adequate evacuation equipment.
While weather conditions may be out of the control of oil rig companies, contingency plans should be made to ensure employees can be safely evacuated from the platforms and remain in reasonable safety until rescue workers arrive.
