Office accidents and HSE advice for employees

To combat the number of office accidents in the UK, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), set up a new scheme in 2010 to encourage employees to take responsibility for their own safety at work.

According to the HSE, workplaces where employees play an active part in health and safety often have lower accident rates. They recommend workers follow a six step action plan which will help identify and reduce potential hazards as well as encouraging safe working practices.

The first recommended step is keeping your employer aware of any needs that you have specific to yourself such as a disability or some faulty equipment that needs changing. By keeping your employer aware of any potential risks specific to you, you can help minimise any hazards in your personal workspace.

The next step is to ensure that you receive the appropriate training for your job and that this is renewed if your job role should change. Staff should also receive information about health and safety at work which can either be given individually or in groups. This can either be given by the employer or by a representative that has been nominated by employees.

The remaining steps involve encouraging the representative to make a critical analysis of the health and safety at their work place which should be supplemented with any safety concerns that other colleagues may have. This should then be discussed with employers along with any potential solutions to the problems.

By taking an active part in the health and safety at work, employees can help minimise the risk of work accidents by ensuring any potential problems get noticed before they cause an accident.
